The story

A life lost. A family seeking answers.

Kelsey Rayner Sr. died from sepsis while in custody in a Georgia county jail after repeatedly seeking medical attention.

Through family interviews, official records, surveillance footage, and medical experts, KELSEY examines what happened and why proper medical care matters for everyone in custody.

The family

In their own words

“Kelsey Rayner Sr. is my son, and I love him with all my heart. No parent should ever have to experience the pain of losing a child under these circumstances.

My hope is that this film will raise awareness about the medical neglect that can occur in jails, detention centers, and prisons, and inspire meaningful changes to the laws and policies intended to protect those in custody.

Every person deserves dignity, compassion, and proper medical care, regardless of their circumstances. They are human beings with families who love them, not simply numbers moving through the justice system.

If sharing Kelsey’s story can help prevent another family from experiencing this kind of loss, then his voice and his memory will continue to make a difference.”

Ms. Mae Joyner Mother of Kelsey Rayner Sr.

“Kelsey represents strength to me, and this film is incredibly important.

I hope it brings greater awareness to medical neglect, not only in jails, but in any facility where our loved ones may not be receiving the proper care and treatment they deserve.”

Marjorie Williams Kelsey’s Sister

“Kelsey meant so much to so many people. He shared the gospel of Jesus Christ, encouraged those who were struggling, and extended a helping hand to those in need. I hope this film reminds us that regardless of race, we are all God’s creation and deserving of love, mercy, and compassion. Above all, I pray it opens hearts and inspires people to treat the sick, the mentally ill, and one another with the humanity and dignity God intended.”
